This river is NOT safe for swimming, as it is wide and swift. There is a boat ramp upstream of the bridge. Environment Southland measures water quality here during summer (December to March).

Waiau is Southland's largest river flowing for over 80 km before emptying into the Foveaux Strait. It is well stocked with brown and rainbow trout. Fishing is the most common activity but many spots along the lower reaches are on private property. Please ask for permission before fishing or exploring the land on private property.
