Unity Island
Buffalo, New York, United States
Unity Island is an island separating the Niagara River and the Black Rock Canal, located within the city limits of Buffalo, New York. The historic island is home to two public parks and a water treatment facility. It is connected to the mainland by a two-span swing bridge. The island's original name in the Seneca language is Deyowenoguhdoh.
This location serves as a popular fishing, picnic, and recreation area for residents of Buffalo, especially those of its west side neighborhoods. The sampling location is within the popular fishing area, downstream of the Buffalo Sewer Authority's wastewater treatment facility. It is monitored because of its proximity to the facility, and a nearby combined sewer overflow.
