Tolchester Estate was established in 1920 on Chesapeake Bay's Eastern Shore near Tolchester Beach, a once hugely popular steamboat destination point. The beach is located directly on the bay and has been a popular swimming spot for generations. There used to be an amusement park at Tolchester Beach, inspired by Coney Island, that included a racetrack, a grandstand, a dance pavilion, and many rides, as well as a picnic area and a sandy bathing beach. However, after the end of the steamboat era the site deteriorated as did the Tolchester Estates. In recent years Tolchester Estate has become popular again as a cottage spot on the bay. There is a popular marina nearby where many boaters stop as they cruise the bay. Samples are collected and tested by the Kent County Health Department and the results are shared with ShoreRivers, who posts the results.
