Sunset Beach in Port Waikato is on the southern side of the Waikato River where the river meets the Tasman Sea. At times, this beach can have very strong currents and rips so make sure to swim between the flags. Port Waikato’s typical population of 1,000 (2013 census) grows substantially during the summer months with visitors flocking to the beach and river mouth. Water quality is monitored at this site from November through March.
