Steps Beach, Tres Palams Marine Reserve
Rincón, Puerto Rico, United States

Created in 2004 in an effort to protect the quickly developing coastline of Rincón, the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve now protects an import section of Puerto Rico's coast. This area is incredibly biodiverse, including an elkhorn coral reef, sea turtle nesting sites, and whale breeding grounds. Steps Beach (Playa Escalera), is located within the Marine Reserve and gets its name from a set of concrete steps on the beach. It is one of Puerto Rico's best surfing locations. In the winter waves can reach over 25ft. In the summer waves are much calmer, however, making it a great place for snorkling and swimming. Steps Beach is easily accesible by road, and parking is available.
