Stanhope is a site of much history and drama, it is where the first British settlers lived in 1770, it was the epicenter of rum running in the Prohibition era and the historic Stanhope Beach Resort, which was settled in 1789, burned down in April 2013. Stanhope beach complex and campground are part of PEI National Park . The large campground conducts evening educational activities about wildlife and PEI history, it also has amenities like laundry, showers, washrooms and picnic areas. The beach complex has a supervised swimming area, a scenic lookout, parking and a picnic area. The Stanhope Golf and Country Club has a 18-hole golf course and is close to the beach.
