Sea Gate Beach-42nd Street
Brooklyn, New York, United States
Sea Gate is a private, gated community at the far western end of Coney Island, at the southwestern tip of Brooklyn, New York. It is comprised of mostly single-family homes, some directly on Gravesend Bay. Residents refer to Sea Gate as "the gate," and venturing into adjoining Coney Island as going "out the gate." Sea Gate has two parks in addition to the private beach areas. On Surf Avenue, there is a playground with a basketball court, skateboard ramps, and jungle gym located next to the Sea Gate Community Center. Additionally there is Lindbergh Park near the Coney Island Light at Norton's Point, which offers stunning views of Lower New York Harbor. "Lindy Park" has a playground and space for picnicking, relaxing, kite flying, baseball playing, or enjoying the spectacular panoramic views. This is a quiet place for families where children are able to play. Summertime is when Sea Gate comes alive; children play in the streets until sundown and traffic is relatively sparse on many streets. Many venture over to Coney Island's amusement park or beyond to the eastern neighborhoods of Brighton Beach, Manhattan Beach, or Bath Beach to the west. The Ocean Parkway is a great place for pedestrians and bikers. The beaches in Sea Gate are uncrowded and always patrolled by lifeguards during summer season. The Sea Gate beach is private and visitors must show beach passes. Beach access is also offered to members of the Sea Gate Beach Club. The beach club, originally for residents, is now privately run and open to anyone who pays for membership. Fishing is available for several seasonal species, including summer flounder, porgies, blackfish and even small striped bass.
