Part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, this beach is a situated in the beautiful Marin headlands. The two military forts that once guarded the shores as well as the surrounding cliffs make this beach feel sheltered and secluded. The dark sand here may hide semi-precious stones such as jade. It can be great fun to search for these stones, but please leave them where you find them. Collecting is not permitted. You can see the Rodeo Lagoon here, a mix of salt and freshwater that is separated from the ocean by the beach. The Lagoon is home to at least two endangered species (tidewater goby, California brown pelican) and many migrating birds. There are three monitoring locations here: North, Central, and South.
