Rangitaiki River at Thornton Boat Ramp
Thornton, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand
This sandy beach is most popular with fishers but swimmers and surfers flock here in the summer months too. Strong rips and currents are created by the powerful flow of water from the Rangitaiki River, the longest in the Bay of Plenty region, reaching 155 km in length. The beach is un-patrolled and the ocean floor has many sudden drop points. Swimmers and surfers are urged to use extreme caution when using this beach.
