The coast around Pukerua Bay is fairly steep, with only a few houses nestled in a row behind two sandy beach areas. In Maori, the words puke rua literally mean two hills but it is not clear which hills the name refers to. The area is a breeding ground for little blue penguins making it a popular spot among birders, as well as surfers, and scuba divers. It is is a great place for swimming and exploring the many walkways in the area. Parking and washroom facilities are available.
