Plum Island is home to Newbury Beach which is a 6-mile barrier beach south of Newburyport. The island is also home to the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge which hosts several bird, plant and animal species. Southern portions of the beach are closed most of the year due to nesting Piping Plovers.
