This monitoring site is located ocean side of Cape Hatteras National Sea Shore, north of Coquina Beach Parking and life guard station. Swimming is permitted at all public access points but swimmers are highly encouraged to swim close to one of the three life guard stations on the National Sea Shore. Swimming is prohibited at night as it is extremely dangerous, however visitors are encouraged observe the ocean front from a distance. The beaches and ocean often sparkle and glow at night due to the diverse population of bioluminescent species on the island.

The area is also well known for fishing, which is said to be best ing the spring and fall. Surfers are required to stay at least 300 feet away from designated swimming areas and fishing piers. Boat launching and camping is restricted to official marinas and campgrounds. The Oregon Intel Campground, marina and Bodie Island Light house are just south of this beach.
