Morro Rock was completely surrounded by water until the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers created an artificial harbour, breakwater and road connecting it to the main land. The rock is 576 feet high volcanic plug that crumbles easily. Climbing is not permitted for conservation and safety reasons. Parts of the park and marine are designated sanctuaries and conservation areas. Tons of wildlife can be seen from shore.
