Half Moon Bay, California, United States

Montara State Beach is located eight miles north of Half Moon Bay off of Highway 1, on the San Francisco Peninsula in San Mateo County. It is one of the cleanest in the state and a popular location for visitors who want to surf, fish, or explore the beach tide pools. The beach is bounded by low hills both to the north and south. Restaurants and grocery stores are nearby, as well as overnight accommodations at the Point Montara Lighthouse. There are two beach access points from the bluff area: one across from Second Street, immediately south of Outrigger restaurant, and the other about a half-mile north on the oceanside of Highway 1. The paths down to the beach are steep. The weather can be fickle so layered clothing is recommended. Dogs are permitted but must be on a leash of maximum 6 feet at all times. No beach fires or fireworks are allowed and refrain from removing shells or driftwood from the beach. Permits are required for all events and weddings. Also part of Montara State Beach is Montara Mountain, also called McNee Ranch, which features the only undisturbed coastal mountain habitat found in over 100 miles of coastline. You will also find biking, hiking, and horseback trails.
