Only a short distance from town, this site offers a large grass area for sports, rest or picnicking, as well as enjoying the river. Environment Southland measures water quality here during summer (December to March).

The Mataura River in Gore is one of the best fly fishing spots in the world. Hatches of mayfly cause the wild brown trout to go into a feeding frenzy, peaking in the morning with sporadic hatches throughout the day. The average size of the trout caught here is 2-3 pounds but there are a few 10-pound fish caught every year as well.
