Maraetotara Lagoon sits near the mouth of the Maraetotara River and Te Awanga Domain. The Maraetotara river is recognized for its ecological value in providing eel and trout habitat. The upper river has been targeted for extensive riparian restoration work since 2003. Maraetotara Falls Reserve is located nearby. Facilities include electric bbq's, playground with a skate park and flying fox, toilets and campervan waste disposal station.
