A popular summer spot, Manhattan Beach is usually teeming with activity. The path and bikeway along the beach is popular for biking, jogging, roller-blading, and skateboarding. Volleyball nets are set up along the beach, and swimming, body boarding and surfing are popular among residents and visitors. Surfing is allowed at the Manhattan Beach Pier and north Manhattan Beach (aka El Porto). Downtown Manhattan Beach runs along Manhattan Beach Boulevard near the pier with several stores, restaurants and bars and inexpensive parking. Manhattan Beach is often compared to Hermosa Beach as less crowded. Lifeguards are on duty during daylight hours.
