Maketu Beach at Estuary mouth
Maketu, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand
The monitoring site is at an interface between the Maketu estuary and the open coast. Maketu is a small coastal town on Okurei Point. Maketu was the traditional landing site of the Arawa canoe. The town is named after an ancient kumara (sweet potato) pit in Hawaiki, the mythical place where, according to oral tradition, the Maori people sailed from. The beach area has a car park, public toilets and a café/takeaway store.
Today, it is a popular swimming, fishing and surfing beach and is lifeguard patrolled.
