The State acquired the four barrier islands in 1983. In 1996, the State and County merged adjoining parkland areas to form Lovers Key Carl E. Johnson State Park. At one time only accessible by boat and thought to be a romantic spot for couples, the park offers over 2 miles of beach along the Gulf of Mexico. Beach access is by boardwalk or trams. The park facility offers a vast range of activities with multiple accesses to different waterbodies. Beachgoers and nature lovers alike will not be disappointed. Operating hours are 8 a.m. to sunset, year-round. Admission/access fees apply. For more information, please contact the park at 239-463-4588. For tour reservations and rentals of bicycles, canoes and kayaks, please contact 239-765-7788. Fishing regulations/licenses may apply.
