A disused coal-mined pit, Lake Puketirini is 64 metres deep at its deepest point and is used for many activities such as swimming, kayaking, waka ama, Scuba dive training, boating and water-skiing. There is also a walk around the lake. Public toilets are available here. Access to the boat ramp can be obtained by purchasing an access key from the Waikato District Council. Cyanobacterial samples are also taken during the swimming season.

This site is monitored for 12 weeks over the summer period (the start of December to the end of February).
