Lake Kainui is located within the Kainui peat bog in the Horsham Downs area. Due to its locality, the lake is highly peat-influenced, giving the water a brown/tea-coloured appearance. This lake is popular for water skiers during the summer months. An access key to the boat ramp can be obtained from Waikato District Council.

Cyanobacterial samples are also taken during the swimming season.

This site is monitored for 12 weeks over the summer period (the start of December to the end of February).
