Strong winds on this wildlife reserve make it ideal for windsurfing and kite surfing. Powerboats are not permitted as it is a wildlife reserve and home to the Great Crested Grebe. Kayak fishing is growing in popularity in Canterbury, especially on this lake. Other activities from this campsite include swimming, picnicking, bird watching and exploring the shores around the lake.

Lake Clearwater is shallow high country lake located in the upper Ashburton basin, in a wide open valley surrounded by mountains. This site is monitored for recreational water quality during the summer months only.
