Kill Devil Hills, the oldest town in the Outer Banks (established in 1953), offers visitors a rich history and heritage within the beautiful coastal town. The beauty of the area with its warm breezes and huge sand dunes (many reaching over one hundred feet high) is unquestionable. It's no wonder that the Wright Brothers chose Kill Devil Hill, one of the larger sand dunes, to launch their first airplane! Some locals say it's for the hill and that famous first flight that the area got its name. Others explain that the town, home to the Killdeer (a species of bird) and this combined with Hills (for the huge sand dunes) is what early natives called the area. Today, Kill Devil Hills is one of the most popular vacation destinations on the Outer Banks. With thousands of rental homes, great restaurants, sports and activities, and shopping, Kill Devil Hills is at the center of an Outer Banks vacation.
