Kaka Point is a small settlement at the northern edge of the Catlins with a superb white sandy beach. It is located 14 km south of Balclutha and 8 km north of the headland of Nugget Point. The area is named after the Kaka bird whose signature call is "kaaa kaaa". The scenic reserve is moments away from the beach providing many walking trails. The beach provides fairly consistent surf but swimmers and surfers are cautioned to beware of rips and sharks.

Water is generally safe for recreational activities. However, bacterial contamination can occur, commonly after rainfall. At Kaka Point the rain-gauge at Puerua is used to identify if high bacteria results are related to rainfall events.
