Hurunui River at SH1 Bridge
Lowry Hills Range, Canterbury, New Zealand
This location is not especially recommended for swimming, as it is more a site for scientific water quality monitoring due to the depth of the river waters here. The site can only be reached via a rough gravel road and there are no close amenities.
The river is deep and swift and is accessed from the north side of the SH1 bridge. A large deep pool located under a cliff face is popular for swimming, fishing and launching jetboats. The site has limited shade so is exposed to the sun, the water can be swift and 4WD's and other vehicles are frequent.
This site is monitored weekly between the months of November and March for recreational water quality by Environment Canterbury.
