The Field Research Facility (FRF) is internationally recognized for its mission, which is "Advancing Coastal Knowledge through observation and discovery". The 1840 foot long pier was established in 1977 by the US Army Corps of Engineers. They record wave, wind, tide and current information with specially designed vehicles like the 3 wheeled CRAB.

Project include studies on improving emergency response for natural disasters as well as predicting how some natural disasters will change beaches.

Public outdoor tours are offered from Mid June - August from 10am - 11am.
