Deep Rock Swimming Hole is a hidden gem nestled along the Yarra River in Melbourne, Australia.  It holds both historical charm and natural allure. Once a thriving swim club spot in the early 20th century, it has seen a recent resurgence thanks to the Yarra Yabbies—a dedicated group of local swimmers who’ve been braving its waters since 2021.

A rugged rock wall soars high on the opposite bank, once used as a cliff diving launch pad into the deep water below.  Access to the water is relatively easy from the northern riverbank, where large flat boulders serve as stepping stones for both humans and their canine companions.

Be aware though, the sediment in the Yarra means zero visibility underwater, and after rainfall, the water quality can suffer, rendering the river unsafe for swimming.

To reach this hidden oasis, you may bike along the scenic Yarra Trail from Flinders Street Station, take a train to Victoria Park station and walk north, or drive via Johnstone St to Trenerry Crescent.  Alternatively, venture from Yarra Bend Road in Fairfield, where you’ll find Deep Rock just a short walk upstream from Dights Falls.
