Cox's Bay is named after John and Jane Cox, who used the area for market gardening in the 1840's. The water front is transit accessible, has ample parking and connects to Cox's Bay Park, Bayfield Park, Hukanui Reserve and Kelmarna Organic City Farm.

Cox's Bay is a favourite spot for athletes, it has rugby and soccer fields, batting cages, cricket pitches, basketball court and trails perfect for jogging and running. The park becomes an off leash dog park after 5 pm in the winter and after 7 pm in the summer. Bayfield park facilities include picnic area with barbecues and hosts outdoor cinema. Kelmarna Organic City farm is open to the public and can be accessed off of Hukanui Crescent. A car park and public transit bus stops are located just off of West End Road.

This beach has received special status of red. The area will continue to be monitored but warning signs have been posted as it has a history of poor water quality.
