Club at Point O'Woods-Ocean
Ocean Beach, New York, United States
Point O'Woods is a private vacation retreat and club on Fire Island, New York. It is located between Ocean Bay and Cherry Grove. It is exclusively open to members and their guests, who are the only people allowed through the hamlet's gate or have of use the private ferry that runs from Bay Shore on Long Island. Its tight restrictions have permitted Point O'Woods to avoid much commercial development that has affected the rest of Fire Island. It has a small town feel with services such as a post office, church and fire department, ferry port, and a general store. The hamlet's bay harbor includes a swimming area. Point O'Woods is known for its peaceful atmosphere, safe environment, and family orientation. It is said to have been the first settlement on Fire Island, though Cherry Grove also makes that claim. The hamlet opens in mid-Spring and closes in early Fall each year. As in other towns on Fire Island, cars are not allowed, and bicycles and wagons are the primary means of transportation. This is a Tier III beach.
