China Camp Beach is located on the shore of the San Pablo Bay and is full of rich Chinese fishing village history. China Camp Beach received its name due to the fact that in the 1880s nearly 500 people from Canton, China moved to this area to create a shrimp-fishing village. There is a museum at the China Camp Village which helps to further tell the story of these shrimp fishermen. This beach is part of China Camp State Park which offers tons of amenities and activities for families and individuals such as wildlife-watching, mountain biking, hiking, picnicking, horseback riding, swimming and boating. In addition, there is a snack open on weekends, public restrooms and campgrounds. San Pablo Bay is a tidal estuary that forms the northern extension of San Francisco Bay which connects to the Pacific Ocean thus this is a salt water bay. China Camp State Park is part of the San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve which is used to promote wetlands research, education and stewardship.
