Buffalo Beach stretches for 5 km and is the main swimming beach in the town of Whitianga. Shelter from the harbour makes this a safe family swimming beach. Buffalo Beach got its name after the HMS Buffalo, which was wrecked during a storm while anchored in Mercury Bay. Water quality is monitored at this site from November through March.
