After previous attempts at development failed, the County acquired 17 acres on the northern tip of Estero Island, in 1987, to be used for passive and active recreation. The location provides visitors with access to the Gulf of Mexico and Matanzas Pass, commonly referred to as the backbay. Ideal for viewing vessels navigate the local waters, the park was named for Nathaniel Bowditch for his contributions to the widely used celestial navigation system. The park offers many stunning vistas, and birders enjoy the species-rich preserve habitat. Onsite amenities include concession, shaded picnic areas, an amphitheater, nature/walking trails, a day dock, restrooms with changing rooms and 75 parking spaces. Park operates dawn til dusk and has handicap beach access. Parking fees apply. Fishing regulations/licenses may apply. For watersport information, please visit www.bowditchpark.com.
