Birch Cove Beach offers residents refreshing lake access in the heart of the city! As of 2018, Birch Cove Beach is the second-most visited beach operated by HRM. The beach is located minutes from downtown Dartmouth and Mic Mac Mall. On-site, there are bicycle racks available for use. Public transportation is also an available and reliable option. Walking from behind MicMac Aquatic Club you can also access the beach shoreline.

Birch Cove Beach is very popular during the summer months of the year. Each day, approximately, 200 people visit the beach. From July 1 to August 31, there are lifeguards supervising the beach from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. From late May until the end of September, washrooms and changing facilities are available for public use from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Birch Cove Beach is on Lake Banook, an important lake to the paddling community. Several aquatic clubs are based on Lake Banook: Banook Canoe Club, Senobe Canoe Club, Micmac Amateur Aquatic Club, and North Star Rowing Club. In 2022, Lake Banook hosted the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships, and paddling events in the Pan-American Games. In 2023, Lake Banook will host paddling events in the North American Indigenous Games.
