The upper parts of the foreshore are characterized by fine gravel beaches and iron-stained quartz pebbles. Awarua Bay is popular for recreational fishing, boating, picnicking, walking and bird watching, as well as being a popular windsurfing and kite-surfing venue. Environment Southland measures water quality here during summer (December to March).
