Aparima River at Thornbury
Thornbury, Southland, New Zealand
This is a large grassy area surrounded by large trees, and is accessible from both sides of the road. Large vehicles will not be able to fit underneath the bridge. A lovely spot for a break and some swimming and relaxing. Environment Southland measures water quality here during summer (December to March).
Freedom camping is permitted for up to 28 days at the Aparima Bridge Reserve. Amenities include public toilets and rubbish bins. Pets are welcome but should be closely monitored as the river has been identified by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area, supporting breeding colonies of the Black-billed Gull. The river is a popular fishing spot with spinning being the best method in the morning and fly fishing during mid-day.
