awharanui Beach (Anchor Bay) is a great destination for a day out.

Take a picnic, or book in and stay overnight at the camping ground.

The beach can get good surf, but be aware that the waves may dump during outgoing tides. Rip currents are common along the beach, particularly adjacent to the rocks.

The beach is not patrolled by surf lifeguards, so stay within your limits; if in doubt stay out.

If you're planning on taking paddle craft out, make sure you check the conditions first, especially the wind as it may be stronger than it first seems. Inflatables are not recommended during offshore winds.

Visit www.adventuresmart.org.nz for more information.

Long-term monitoring by Auckland Council at Anchor Bay has consistently identified good water quality. However, please exercise caution following heavy rain in this area.
